What is PDC?

Pedagogical Digital Competence (PDC) is defined by us as the dynamic interplay between cognitive and affective motivational dispositions, knowledge, and skills of pre and in service teachers for designing, enacting, and adapting pedagogy in technology enriched learning environments. It is not just about using digital tools. It is about making informed and adaptive pedagogical decisions with technology.

For example, imagine Anne, a primary school teacher, introducing a new digital tool in her lesson.

During the lesson, PDC becomes visible as Anne:
Questions and evaluates

Whether the tool is worth the effort. Her motivation and self efficacy shape whether she moves forward.

Reconsiders the instructional design

When she realizes the tool does not automatically align with her learning goals. She restructures the task to better support understanding.

Notices and interprets

That one student is disengaged, and adjusts her teaching accordingly.

Reflects and refines

Her practice after the lesson.

This dynamic process integrating motivation, knowledge, situation specific skills, and reflection is PDC in action.
